I'm taking on The Myton Hospices Moonlight Walk to help raise funding for this important charity.

The Myton Hospices provides compassionate care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families - both in their Inpatient Units and out in the community. They are not NHS funded, and rely on our help.

To continue offering this care free of charge, they need to raise £12.7 million of the £15.3 million it will cost this year.

Last year my mum was rushed to hospital with a terminal event in her struggle against cancer. We knew she wouldn't be able to go home so we were listed for a hospice bed. We spent the first 48 hours in the emergency department, where busy staff struggled to meet her needs. Then we were moved to a cramped pod on the acute medical admissions unit where, over the next 5 days, we struggled to have our last meaningful conversations amid the noise of emergency bells and shouting. Finally we were moved to a wonderful room at the hospice, and mum was settled into a bed next a large window overlooking the bright garden with a little bird table and flowers. Sadly it was a little too late for mum to see it, as she was no longer aware of her surroundings. But as family, we needed that respite, to sit with her and reflect in the peace, talk to staff who understood and had the right words.

I was saddened to see there were many empty beds, just lacking the staff to run them.

More people than ever need a Hospice Bed, and tragically, too many people on the waiting list for a bed at Myton will die before they can access one.

As the only provider of Hospice Inpatient Beds in Coventry and Warwickshire, the demand is huge.

I wish mum could have seen that garden.

That’s why I’m taking on The Myton Hospices Moonlight Walk, to raise money so they can be there for everyone who needs them, now and in the future.

To reach this year’s Moonlight Walk target of £250,000, they rely entirely on sponsorship, and that’s where you come in. Your support could help fund:

• £94 could fund one adult counselling session
• £360 could fund our Myton at Home service for a patient for one day
• £450 could fund an Inpatient bed for one day
• £545 could fund the required drugs for one patient

Please donate today and help The Myton Hospices be there for those who need them most.
